Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
|
Interlibrary loan requests must be made online. Depending on the type of request (book or journal article), online requests are either made in the NEIU Library Catalog, or our interlibrary loan system, ILLiad Interlibrary Loan.
Follow the steps in the diagram below to determine how and when to submit a request for materials not owned by the Library.
How many requests can I submit?
You may submit as many requests as you need. However, in order to be able to fill all of our requests in a timely and equitable manner, ILL staff may not be able to process more than 5 of your requests per day. Please be assured we will fill all of your requests as quickly as possible.
How long does It take to receive my materials?
The amount of time it may take for you to receive your materials varies depending on the type of material and its availability. Library materials such as computer manuals and multimedia may be difficult to obtain due to their limited availability from lending libraries.
No, all requests are free of charge.
Can I still order materials ILL Express (rush service) for journal articles?
ILL Express service is no longer available. However, by requesting and receiving journal articles online through ILLiad Interlibrary Loan you should receive most journal articles as quickly as our previous ILL Express service at no charge.
Textbooks can only be requested through the I-Share Catalog. Textbooks not available in I-Share Catalog can not be requested through ILLiad Interlibrary Loan.
How will I be notified when my item has been received?
You will be notified by e-mail to your NEIU email address when your requested item has been received.
Can I receive emails concerning my interlibrary loan requests at a non-NEIU email address?
No. Email notification for interlibrary loan materials and services, including overdue notices, will only be sent to your NEIU email account. If you use another email account, such as AOL, HotMail or Yahoo Mail, you will also need to access your NEIU email account to receive interlibrary loan emails. You are responsible for reading and if needed, responding to emails sent by the Library concerning your interlibrary loan requests.

How long can I borrow books from another library through ILL?
Loan periods are determined by the Lending Library. Please note the due dates enclosed in the item as well as the due dates listed in your ILL accounts.
Can I renew books I borrowed from another library through ILL?
Some ILL books may be renewed. If the item is not renewable it will be stated so in the information attached to the book or in the information listed in your ILL account.
How do I renew a book I borrowed from another library through ILL?
If the lending library allows your book to be renewed, you may do so by going to your ILLINET Online account (for books borrowed from an I-Share library) or your ILLiad Interlibrary Loan account (for books borrowed from a non I-Share library). Renewal options are available in each system.
What happens if I do not return ILL items on time?
ILL items not returned on time will result in a hold placed on your Library privileges, including the use of the ILLiad ILL system, as well as a hold on your record at Admissions and Records. You may not borrow books, submit ILL requests, register, receive transcripts or graduate until all fines are paid to the Lending Library.

You will use your NEIU ID number and a password when logging on to the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan system to edit your personal information, such as your address or phone number, make new requests for journal articles and books and review a list of items you have requested in the past.
Your password can be anything you like. We recommend that you follow good security practice and choose a password that is different from those you use to access other systems. However, no one but you will know your password, not even the library staff. The password you set is stored in an encrypted file.
